The National Center Unveils Scientific Progress

Naples, 17 June 2025 – About a year ahead of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) deadline, the National Center has delivered on its promises and timelines, committing 70% of its available resources and directing 42% of its funding toward southern Italy.
During its first Scientific Congress in Naples, the National Center presented results from 95 funded research projects, yielding 500 scientific publications, 25 patents, and 34 technology transfer initiatives — including 10 spin-offs and 17 entrepreneurial ventures.
The National Center is strengthening the country’s role in future medicine and shifting from a fragmented view toward a more integrated approach to collaboration and innovation. “Our challenge extends beyond identifying which RNAs we need to treat a sick cell; we must also find effective ways to deliver them to tumors, the nervous system, or faulty organs. This sophisticated task requires strong collaboration between the public and private sectors,” explained Prof Rosario Rizzuto, President of the National Center.

Major achievements to date include new RNA therapies for rare mitochondrial disorders; the first European clinical trial of CAR-T therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, published in Nature Medicine; the initiation of a gene therapy trial for beta-thalassemia; and the development of small SINEUP RNAs designed to boost the production of missing proteins in genetic disorders safely. These innovations are redefining advanced therapy landscapes in Italy and across Europe.

Targeted investment has enhanced key facilities, including GMP production sites at the University Federico II in Naples and the Gene Therapy Center at Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome.

International collaborations with Monash University and missions to China, Japan, and the USA have raised the profile of Italian research on the global stage.
