From the Heart of Naples to the Future of Medicine: the New Talents of the PharmaTech Academy

Naples, 14 July 2025 – The successful conclusion of the second edition of the PharmaTech Academy was celebrated with Graduation Day at the University of Naples Federico II – Scampia University Complex.

This year’s 19 graduates—holding academic backgrounds in biology, medicine, pharmacy, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sciences—represent the next generation of specialists in gene therapy and RNA-based pharmaceuticals, a field at the forefront of personalized and regenerative medicine.

The event was attended by family, friends, and distinguished authorities, including:

  • Prof. Matteo Lorito, Rector, University of Naples Federico II
  • Prof. Maura Striano, Naples City Councilor for Education and Family
  • Prof. Vincenzo Santagada, Naples City Councilor for Health and Green Spaces
  • Valeria Fascione, Campania Region Councilor for Research, Innovation & Startups
  • Prof. Giovanni Esposito, President, School of Medicine and Surgery, Federico II
  • Prof. Angelo A. Izzo, Director, Department of Pharmacy, Federico II
  • PharmaTech Academy’s Scientific Committee, including Prof. Angela Zampella, Prof. Rosario Rizzuto, and Prof. Bruno Catalanotti

PharmaTech Academy is a unique program in Italy, dedicated to the training of professionals in the research, development, and regulation of gene therapy and RNA-based treatments. Thanks to a learning-by-doing approach, students gained direct experience through internships with leading pharmaceutical and biotech firms, including: Anemocyte S.r.l., Novartis, Nouscom Srl, Deloitte, Italfarmaco S.p.A., Dompé Farmaceutici S.p.A., Genetic Officina Farmaceutica, Elysium Cell Bio Ita, PBL Srl, ReiThera Srl, Sanofi S.r.l., Stevanato Group, Takis S.r.l., Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., and Integrated Drug Discovery – IRBM.

Many of these companies are expected to welcome graduates back as they transition from trainees to contributors in real-world therapeutic development.

Graduates leave the PharmaTechAcademy well-equipped to address the growing demand for Advanced Therapeutic Medicinal Products (ATMPs)—including therapies based on DNA, RNA, cells, and tissues, which are increasingly being adopted across Europe. According to industry data, the European gene and cell therapy market, valued at $2.17 billion in 2022, is projected to reach $15.15 billion by 2028.

In Italy, national spending on ATMPs grew by 6014% over four years, highlighting the sector’s rapid expansion and strategic importance. This is driving the Italian market for advanced therapies with an expected growth from €462.2 million in 2024 to €2.5 billion by 2028, a 449% increase (Businesscoot, 2025). These trends underline the relevance of programs like PharmaTech Academy in developing a workforce ready to tackle tomorrow’s most pressing medical challenges.

With growing interest in the program, the 2025-2026 academic year will admit up to 40 students, all supported by scholarships from the National Center. The Academy will continue to offer a robust curriculum that includes coursework in Design of Experiments, Quality by Design, and Risk Management, preparing students to contribute across regulatory, research, and production roles.

Applications are now open for the 3rd Edition of PharmaTech Academy, interested candidates are invited to apply for admission to the 2025–26 academic year of the PharmaTech Academy by September 5, 2025. Remote interviews will begin on September 10, and the final list of 40 selected participants will be announced on September 15, 2025.
