National Center Joins Italy–Kenya Research Mobility Initiative

3 August 2026, Padua – The Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) has selected the National Center to participate in a new international mobility program that will welcome Kenyan researchers to Italy’s leading research infrastructures funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

The initiative, established under MUR Call No. 175/2026, supports the mobility of Kenyan researchers to Research Infrastructures, Technological Innovation Infrastructures and National Centers funded through the PNRR. Promoted by Minister of University and Research Anna Maria Bernini with an investment of €500,000, the program is a concrete implementation of the scientific cooperation objectives of the Mattei Plan for Africa, strengthening bilateral collaboration between Italy and Kenya in higher education, research and innovation.

The program involves 13 Italian research institutions, supporting 19 research projects through a total of 48 three-month mobility slots. As part of the initiative, the National Center will host a Kenyan researcher for six months at the University of Naples Federico II, within the Department of Molecular Medicine and Medical Biotechnology, contributing to research activities focused on precision medicine, gene therapy and RNA-based technologies.

Precision medicine through RNA and aptamer technologies

The project, coordinated by Prof. Gerolama Condorelli, with the participation of Prof. Nicola Zambrano, will focus on developing innovative therapeutic and diagnostic strategies based on aptamers, RNA technologies and advanced drug delivery systems for applications in oncology.

The research will investigate aptamers capable of selectively recognizing tumor targets for diagnostic, monitoring and therapeutic applications. Activities include the identification of novel circulating biomarkers for liquid biopsy, the development of biosensors targeting extracellular vesicles, and the design of functionalized liposome-based drug delivery systems. Researchers will also develop molecular strategies based on synthetic messenger RNA and oncolytic viruses to enable the selective delivery of biological therapeutics to specific organs and tissues.

These activities contribute to the National Center’s broader scientific mission of developing next-generation technologies for advanced therapies and accelerating their translation into clinical practice.

Building long-term scientific partnerships

Beyond its scientific objectives, the program reflects a broader commitment to international collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The initiative builds upon an established relationship between the Department of Molecular Medicine and Medical Biotechnology at the University of Naples Federico II and the Kenyan university system. Over recent years, the Department has developed research and educational collaborations with Kenyatta University and the University of Nairobi, hosting students and early-career researchers while promoting joint scientific activities.

By welcoming a Kenyan researcher into its laboratories, the project aims not only to advance research in precision oncology but also to strengthen long-term partnerships between Italian and Kenyan institutions.

“This initiative demonstrates how investments made through the PNRR can continue generating value well beyond the construction of research infrastructures,” said Prof. Rosario Rizzuto, President of the National Center for Gene Therapy and Drugs based on RNA Technology. “The program gives concrete expression to the objectives of the Mattei Plan for Africa by promoting scientific cooperation based on the exchange of expertise and the development of long-term partnerships. Opening our laboratories to researchers from other countries transforms the scientific assets built over recent years into a lasting engine for innovation and international collaboration.”

Prof. Gerolama Condorelli, Scientific Coordinator of the project, highlighted the importance of the initiative for both research and international cooperation:

“This project will enable us to develop new precision medicine strategies based on aptamers and RNA technologies, with the goal of identifying increasingly effective tools for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The participation of a Kenyan researcher represents a significant added value, because scientific progress is driven by the exchange of expertise, experience and diverse perspectives. For our Department, it is also an opportunity to strengthen a collaboration with Kenya that has grown through years of shared scientific and educational activities and is now entering a new stage of maturity.”

Advancing the National Center’s international mission

The Italy–Kenya mobility program reinforces the National Center’s commitment to internationalization while highlighting the long-term value of the research infrastructures established through the PNRR.

By promoting the exchange of researchers, expertise and technologies, the initiative strengthens Italy’s scientific ecosystem, expands collaboration beyond Europe, and contributes to the development of innovative solutions in gene therapy, RNA technologies and precision medicine for the benefit of global health.
